Woman blames nursing home for man's death

Nursinghome

RIPLEY – A woman is suing a nursing home for allegedly providing negligent medical care to a man that lead to his death.

Elizabeth Kenny, as personal representative of Douglas Patterson, filed a lawsuit Dec. 2 in Jackson County Circuit Court against Eldercare of Jackson County, Eldercare Rehabilitation, Eldercare Management Associates, and Michael Conway citing negligent hiring, supervision and training of employees.

According to the complaint, Patterson was a resident at Eldercare of Jackson County in Ripley from Feb. 29, 2012, to Jan. 1, 2014. Kenny alleges Eldercare of Jackson County failed to provide adequate fluid intake to Patterson and prevent him from becoming dehydrated. Kenny says Eldercare of Jackson County failed to monitor and assess Patterson's medication intake and notify the physician in charge of his physical condition due to being overmedicated.

Kenny argues that due to Eldercare of Jackson County's negligence Patterson suffered urinary tract infections, sepsis, acute kidney injury and other physical problems, leading to his death.

Kenny seeks compensatory damages along with punitive damages, interest and costs.

Patterson is represented by attorney Andrew L. Paternostro of The Bell Law Firm in Charleston.
