Ireland announces state Voter Hall of Fame

CHARLESTON -- Secretary of State Betty Ireland has announced the creation of the West Virginia Voter Hall of Fame to honor state citizens who have voted in every West Virginia General Election for at least 50 consecutive years.

"The West Virginia Voter Hall of Fame inductees truly understand the significance of living in a free democracy, and the importance of exercising their right to vote," Ireland said. "Having a 50-year consecutive voting history indicates these citizens recognize their vote is precious and has been secured for them by generations of patriots-our honored veterans and those who are serving today."

Letters were mailed to county clerks requesting the names of the oldest voter in each county who meets the requirement of having voted in the last 25 West Virginia General Elections (50 consecutive years). These voters will comprise the first class of inductees into the West Virginia Voter Hall of Fame. Thereafter, each county clerk will submit another eligible voter's name annually. The Secretary of State's Office will administer the program.

"Establishing such an outstanding voting record demonstrates a citizen's lifelong commitment to one of the most fundamental responsibilities of citizenship," Ireland said. "We proudly induct them into this honorable and distinguished place in West Virginia's voting history."

Members of the first class of inductees will be announced and formally recognized later this year.
