HUNTINGTON -– Dan Greear has launched a grassroots campaign for Attorney General.
Over the weekend in Huntington, Greear and 20 supporters went door-to-door to campaign, distribute literature, answer questions and hear concerns.
Greear's campaign plans to have supporters "barnstorming" the state every Saturday morning until the May 13 primary. Greear and the volunteers plan to hit every major town in the state.
Greear, a Charleston attorney and former member of the House of Delegates, said Mike Ankrom of Huntington will organize his grassroots campaign.
Ankrom is a veteran of numerous campaigns across West Virginia and a former employee of the Republican State Party. Greear's campaign said Ankrom also led the winning Mike Huckabee effort during the state's recent Republican Convention.
"The problems with the current Attorney General's Office are apparent and I have clear solutions to these problems," Greear, a Republican said, referring to current AG Darrell McGraw. "I want to personally deliver that message to voters and discuss any concerns they may have.
"We simply need to return the Attorney General's Office to serve the function it was constitutionally intended to do; provide protection to West Virginia citizens through legal representation. I want West Virginians to know they can count on me to make these changes and I cannot think of a better way to spread the message than to tell them myself."
Greear said he realizes McGraw likely will be raising a significant amount of money this election cycle, with trial lawyers funding his campaign. While the Greear campaign will raise funds, he said he strongly believes that grassroots is the key.
"McGraw may outspend us, but he certainly won't outwork us," Greear said.
