Women sue mental health group over firings

CHARLESTON – Two women are suing a mental health group because they said they were fired and not paid back wages.

Brandy Thomas and Nancy Devine filed identical lawsuits March 10 in Kanawha Circuit Court against the National Alliance on Mental Health office in Dunbar and Rhonda McCormick, the group's president.

The women say they were community family outreach coordinators for a number of years before they were fired on July 7, 2008.

Both allege they had not been paid the wages they earned between May 31 and the day of their terminations.

When the women demanded their back pay, the company allegedly refused.

On the day of both plaintiffs' firing, they say their employer tried to subject them to disciplinary counseling after providing them with their notices of termination.

The women claim that officials with the group have said in e-mails that they will pay the plaintiffs' back wages if they undergo this counseling.

The plaintiffs seek various damages.

Michael Olivio and Shawn Romano are representing the plaintiffs. The case is before Kanawha Circuit Judge James Stucky.

Kanawha Circuit Court case numbers: 09-C-428 and 09-C-429
