Woman says wrong allergy shot sent her into shock

HUNTINGTON -- A woman says she underwent anaphylactic shock after doctors at University Family Allergy stabbed her with the wrong allergy shot.

Rhonda K. Shepherd filed a lawsuit July 8 in Cabell Circuit Court against Marshall University Board of Governors, doing business as University Family Allergy.

Shepherd claims she went to University Family Allergy on July 9, 2007, for allergy immunotherapy where she was supposed to receive one of a series of allergy shots.

However, one of the employees at University Family Allergy misidentified Shepherd, so she received another patient's shot, according to the complaint.

As a result, Shepherd went into anaphylactic shock, making her throat swell and become tight and causing her to drool. She also was unable to swallow, her lips swelled and she had difficulty breathing, the suit states.

After the incident, Shepherd required psychological care and medical treatment for breathing difficulties, the complaint says.

Shepherd is seeking unspecified damages, plus attorney's fees, costs, pre- and post-judgment interest and other relief the court deems just.

Chad S. Lovejoy of Duffield, Lovejoy and Stemple in Huntington will be representing her.
