Mullens woman sues 14 companies in asbestos suit for stepfather's death

CHARLESTON -- A Mullens woman named 14 companies in an asbestos-related case for her stepfather's death.

Charles Lilly was exposed to large quantities of asbestos in products manufactured, sold, designed, supplied, distributed, mined, milled, relabeled, processed, applied or installed by the 14 defendants, according to a complaint filed March 15 in Kanawha Circuit Court.

Rhonda Thornton-Burrell claims her stepfather was diagnosed with a pleural-based adencarcinoma of the lung in March 2009. He died Jan. 29.

Thornton-Burrell claims the defendants were negligent in exposing Lilly to asbestos and knew or should have known that their actions would cause injuries, disabilities, illnesses and death.

Thornton-Burrell is seeking general, special, punitive and exemplary damages. She is being represented by James M. Barber and Mary H. Keyes.

The case has been assigned to a visiting judge.

The companies named as defendants in the case are Bondex International, Inc.; Borg Warner Morse Tec, Inc.; Certainteed Corporation; Dana Corporation; Georgia-Pacific Corporation; Honeywell International, Inc.; Nitro Industrial Coverings, Inc.; Owens-Illinois, Inc.; Pneumo Abex LLC; RPM, Inc.; RPM International, Inc.; UB West Virginia, Inc.; Union Carbide Corporation; and Vimasco Corp.
