Manchin to speak May 25 at Marion Co. Chamber event

CHARLESTON -- Gov. Joe Manchin will participate in the May 25, Marion County Chamber of Commerce event which will feature Fairmont native and University of Alabama football coach Nick Saban.

Saban's Crimson Tide enter the 2010 college football season as defending national champions.

Manchin said was pleased Saban accepted the invitation to come back to the Mountain State for a daylong visit.

"Nick is a dear friend and I am proud of the success that he has had throughout his coaching career," Manchin said. "I know that his Marion County friends and all of the West Virginia citizens who continue to keep track of the great job he is doing down in Alabama will come out and show their support."

Tina Shaw, president of the Marion County Chamber of Commerce, said the chamber members and community are very excited about the event.

"We have been working on this since last December," she said. "Our members are really looking forward to meeting Coach Saban. I am sure it will be a day everyone who attends will remember."

Saban graduated from Monongah High School in Marion County. He spent time as an assistant coach at West Virginia University in 1978 and 1979. Saban has coached football at both the college and professional ranks.

He is the only college football head coach in Bowl Championship Series era that has won a championship at two schools (Louisiana State University, 2003 and the University of Alabama).
