Former inmate sues jail authority, officer for sexual misconduct, invasion of privacy

CHARLESTON -- A former Southern Regional Jail inmate is suing the West Virginia Regional Jail and Correctional Facility Authority and a correctional officer for sexual misconduct and invasion of privacy.

Gary Grimes, a correctional officer at the Southern Regional Jail, sexually harassed and abused Brittany Simpson during her incarceration and compelled her to "engage in sex acts with another inmate for his sexual gratification," according to a complaint filed June 8 in Kanawha Circuit Court.

Simpson claims Grimes violated her constitutional, statutory and common law rights and protections.

The defendants' acts subjected Simpson to acts of cruel and unusual punishment prohibited by the Eighth Amendment of the Constitution of the United States, according to the suit.

Simpson claims WVRJA negligently failed to supervise Grimes.

Simpson is seeking compensatory and punitive damages. She is being represented by Matthew J. Woelfel.

The case has been assigned to Circuit Judge Charles King.
