PERSONNEL FILE: Spilman named to NLJ Midsize Hot List

CHARLESTON -- The law firm Spilman Thomas & Battle ("Spilman") was recently named to The National Law Journal's 2012 Midsize Hot List.

NLJ used three key criteria in selecting 20 law firms for this year's list: ability to spot emerging legal trends; commitment to controlling client costs; and ability to attract and retain top talent.

"We are honored to have received this national recognition," said Eric W. Iskra, Spilman's member in charge of client relations. "It further exemplifies our commitment to providing excellence and value to our clients."

Along these lines, Spilman was honored for excellence across a spectrum of practice groups, from corporate to litigation. In particular, NLJ recognized the firm's team of experienced trial lawyers, The Battle Group, which is focused on high-stakes, bet-the-company litigation.

In addition to its innovative approach to the practice of the law, Spilman was recognized for client-driven results and value. The billable rates of Spilman attorneys are up to 30 percent less than rates at comparable national firms, and Spilman has been a pioneer in offering alternative and creative fee arrangements.

"Compared to a national law firm, we're paying almost half for the same service and experience," said Deena Ombres, associate general counsel for Louisville, Ky.-based Res-Care Inc., which relies on Spilman for its litigation and employment work.

Finally, NLJ cited Spilman's commitment to the nurturing and development of younger attorneys as reason for its selection. The firm provides regular group instruction and one-on-one mentoring. The firm is able to recruit top talent thanks in part to a challenging but rewarding work environment.
