BRIDGEPORT – The West Virginia Italian Heritage Festival (WVIHF) has named Steptoe & Johnson attorney Sharon Flanery Italian-American Woman of the Year. Flanery is one of four WVIHF honorees for 2013 and will be recognized at the WVIHF dinner in Bridgeport on Aug. 29.
Flanery maintains a busy legal practice while also leading the Steptoe & Johnson Energy and Natural Resources Department. Before earning her law degree Flanery was a petroleum engineer, which adds real world experience to her legal practice. Her legal expertise includes acquisitions and divestitures, mineral leases, joint ventures, contract mining agreements, joint operating agreements as well as land and legal due diligence.
Flanery is included among The Best Lawyers in America®. She was also named a BTI Consulting Client Service All-Star for 2013. What’s more, she recently began her first term as president of the Energy and Mineral Law Foundation.
“We are proud to have Sharon as a member of our team,” stated Susan S. Brewer, Steptoe & Johnson CEO. “She has an amazing ability to connect with virtually anyone. People say that she is a mover and shaker in the energy industry.
"Sharon always says, ‘I just know a lot of people,’ but her humility and talent as a lawyer, and the respect that she has earned from her peers make her a true leader and role model for other women in business.”
The WVIHF honorees are nominated by members of the Bridgeport and Clarksburg communities and the final selections determined by the festival board of directors, according to each nominee’s skills and commitment to the community. The Italian-American Woman of the Year honor is reserved for a native West Virginian of Italian descent.
