MORGANTOWN – Devon L. Gosnell, Of Counsel, has joined the Litigation Department in Steptoe & Johnson PLLC’s Morgantown, W.Va. office.
Before joining Steptoe & Johnson, Gosnell served as an Associate General Counsel for The University of Tennessee, where she handled litigation involving employment matters, including allegations of unlawful discrimination and harassment, student discipline, and tort claims.
She counseled the university on federal regulations including the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), and the Clinical Laboratory Improvements Act (CLIA), and drafted and reviewed contracts for goods and services.
She also practiced employment litigation with Ford & Harrison LLP in Tampa, Fla. and Memphis, Tenn. There, she advised clients on litigation avoidance and compliance with federal, state and local laws governing hiring, firing, compensating, and disciplining employees.
Prior to that, Gosnell served as the assistant U.S. Attorney for the Western District of Tennessee. Throughout her nearly two decades of service, she tried more than 100 jury cases – civil and criminal – and handled more than 40 appeals before U.S. Courts of Appeal.
Gosnell earned her undergraduate degree and Juris Doctor from West Virginia University, her MBA from the University of Memphis and a Master of Divinity from Harding School of Theology. Gosnell is admitted to practice in Florida, Tennessee and West Virginia.
She is a member of the Memphis Bar Association and serves as a legal clinic volunteer for Memphis Area Legal Services.
