Woman says mall store wrongly fired her

CHARLESTON - A Kanawha County woman is suing a company operating a jewelry store in the Charleston Town Center, claiming she was fired because of a co-worker's action.

Amy Kouf was fired from Claire's Boutiques Inc., where she was an assistant manager. She opened the store on the morning of Oct. 20, 2006, and found one of the registers was $60 short. Kouf says she was blamed for stealing the money and was fired.

The manager of the store, Krystal Thaxton, told another employee, Diana Cornwell, that Kouf has stolen the money. Thaxton is also named as a defendant in the suit.

After Kouf was fired, she says she was not paid her wages in full within 72 hours of her termination, which is required by West Virginia Wage Payment and Collection Act.

Kouf is seeking damages for lost of funds, annoyance and inconvenience. The suit also seeks punitive damages because the accusation was a defamation of Kouf's character and false.

The suit was filed Jan. 12 and has been assigned to Judge Tod Kaufman.
