Inmate wants tranferred, re-sentenced

WHEELING - An inmate in Mount Olive Correctional Center has filed a writ of habeas corpus seeking to be transferred to Northern Regional Jail and being re-sentenced.

Denton S. Haney, through his counsel, Charleston attorney Ed ReBrook III, filed the suit March 7 in Ohio Circuit Court. Haney is in jail on felony offenses of sexual abuse and sexual assault in the third degree. He was sentenced to between 22 to 50 years on four counts, which are to be served consecutively.

The suit says that because of the length of the sentences, they were a death sentence for Haney.

Haney seeks transportation to Northern Regional Jail and seeks a sentence that is fair and reasonable under the circumstance, including consideration to Haney's physical and mental health.

Haney also seeks that he be allowed to be placed on home confinement and be allowed to work.

The case has been assigned to Judge James Mazzone.
