CHARLESTON - A Putnam County man has filed a suit against a manufacturer and distributor of cold medicine, claiming something in the medication made him lose him sense of smell.

William Seckman IV filed a suit April 27 in Kanawha Circuit Court against Zicam LLC and Matrixx Initiatives, Inc. Zicam is a cold remedy sold nationwide.

According to the suit, on Oct. 27, 2006, Seckman took Zicam, which contains zinc. Seckman claims the zinc caused him to lose his sense of smell and had an adverse affect on his sense of taste permanently.

Seckman claims losing his sense of smell is dangerous, as he is employed in law enforcement and must find methamphetamine labs, which can be detected by smell.

Seckman, through attorney James Cagle, seeks general and special damages, including the costs of medical treatments.

The case has been assigned to Judge Paul Zakaib.
