World heavy events championship to be held in Bridgeport

BRIDGEPORT -– The Scottish Festival and International Highland Games Federation (IHGF) will welcome the public to Bridgeport City Park on Saturday, May 3, for the Highland Games Heavy Events World Championship.

Out of 12 award-winning strength athletes, respected Olympians, and NCAA All-Americans, only one will be crowned the Highland Games Heavy Events World Champion.

The day-long event, which begins at 8:30 a.m., includes competitions such as Braemar stone, open stone, weight for distance, hammer, weight for height, and caber tosses. Top prize money of $4,000 will be awarded to the event champion.

"This is a unique opportunity to both celebrate and learn about the rich Scots-Irish heritage of our Appalachian region," said James M. Wilson, chairman of the organizing committee for the 2008 Highland Games World Championship and an attorney for Steptoe & Johnson.

"It is a privilege to be able to bring an event of this cultural magnitude to the area, especially an event that is steeped in global athletic competition," he said.
