Former paramedic sues after tractor trailer hits ambulance

WAYNE -- A paramedic is suing both of his former employers, Murrow's Transfer Inc., and an individual after the ambulance he was involved in a vehicle accident.

James York was a paramedic for the Wayne County Commission and Dunlow Emergency Rescue Squad.

On Dec. 20, 2007, he was caring for a patient in the back of the ambulance when it was struck by the trailer attached to a 2000 Freightliner Tractor owned by Murrow's Transfer Inc., according to a complaint filed Dec. 14 in Wayne Circuit Court.

York claims his co-worker, Thomas R. Beckett, was driving the ambulance while he cared for the patient.

According to the suit, as Beckett approached a curve he saw that a trailer attached to Scott Emsley Harris' vehicle was on his side of the road and attempted to come to a complete stop in order to avoid a collision, but the trailer crashed into the ambulance.

York claims when the crash occurred he was retrieving an IV for the patient and was "violently thrown around the back of the ambulance."

York's injuries include a complete rupture of the right rotator cuff; right rotator cuff sprain, strain and tear; tear in knee meniscus; cervical sprain; lumbar sprain; sciatica; headaches; multiple contusions; physical pain and suffering; loss of the ability to enjoy life; nervousness; anxiety; and mental anguish. He also claims to have incurred medical expenses in excess of $30,000.

York is seeking compensatory and punitive damages, as well as an amount in excess of $30,000 to pay for his medical expenses. He is being represented by Pamela A. Lambert.

The case has been assigned to Circuit Judge James Young.
