MORGANTOWN -- Jacquelyn J. Core, a partner in the Morgantown office of the regional firm Steptoe and Johnson for the past 12 years, has been named Deputy general counsel - Health Sciences Center, Vice President for Legal Affairs William H. Hutchens III has announced.
Core's appointment is effective Dec. 16.
Core has previously focused her practice on long-term health care litigation, medical malpractice litigation and labor/employment law, taking 30 civil cases to trial. She was the co-leader of her firm's Long-Term Care Industry Team. She is a member representative of the West Virginia, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Kentucky Health Care Associations, and was appointed 2011 seminar chair of the Defense Research Institute's National Long-Term Care Litigation Seminar.
"Jacquelyn is an outstanding lawyer with an excellent record of success and we are pleased to welcome her to our legal team," Hutchens said. "As with all lawyers in the General Counsel's office, she will represent the interests of the University on a broad range of legal matters, but in particular, she will serve as the primary day-to-day legal advisor to the chancellor of health sciences. In that role, she will have responsibility for many legal issues affecting the Health Sciences Center."
Core earned an undergraduate degree in political science, a doctoral degree in geography and a law degree from WVU. She is a member of the state bars in West Virginia and Pennsylvania. At WVU, she was a charter member of the Order of Augusta, WVU's highest academic honor; Phi Beta Kappa; and was awarded "Best Oral Advocate" in the Law School's Baker Cup competition and was inducted into the Order of the Barristers, among other academic honors.
In the community, she has served on the executive board of the Laurel Run of Big Sandy Watershed Association and the Allegheny Power Advisory Board for the Big Sandy Watershed. She was also a board member of Arts Monongahela and the Greater Uniontown Arts and Heritage Consortium.
Core is active in Boy Scouts as a den leader and committee member. She has coached soccer for the Monongalia Youth Soccer Association. She is the mother of two boys. In the past, she served as co-owner and executive producer of The Game Players, a theatrical company in Southwestern Pennsylvania.
Core is the author of numerous professional publications and presentations.
