CHARLESTON –- A Jackson County man is in jail after an ATV accident killed a Charleston court reporter.
Eric M. Smith, 37, was arrested for driving under the influence causing death after the ATV he was driving on the evening of Jan. 22 crashed on Poverty Ridge Road and killed his passenger, Sandra Marie Jackson, 47.
Jackson was killed when Smith lost control of the ATV and struck an embankment, which caused the ATV to overturn and land on top of Jackson, who was partially ejected from the vehicle. The two were not wearing helmets.
Charleston attorney Harry F. Bell said Jackson had been a court reporter in Charleston for many years.
"It's very tragic when something like this happens," he said. "She was such a nice person."
Smith was taken to South Central Regional Jail, where he was held without bond.
Jackson lived in Charleston, but originally was from Jackson County.
