Man sues Charleston physician for wife's death

CHARLESTON -- A Kanawha County man is suing a Charleston physician and St. Francis Hospital after he claims they are responsible for his wife's death.

On Feb. 8, 2009, Dr. Somes Chandra Guha and St. Francis Hospital prematurely discharged Dorene L. Wolfe and allowed her condition to deteriorate, which resulted in her death on Feb. 28, 2009, according to a complaint filed April 12 in Kanawha Circuit Court.

Ray Wolfe Jr. claims the defendants failed to provide adequate and proper hospital assessment, treatment and disposition to Dorene Wolfe in the emergency department at St. Francis.

"Failure to appreciate the serious and life-threatening nature of Dorene Wolfe's complaints/symptoms including but not limited to: dementia, recurrent falls, nausea/vomiting, diarrhea, weakness, elevated temperature, significant elevated urine levels of glucose and incomplete laboratory evaluation," according to the suit.

Ray Wolfe Jr. claims the defendants deviated from the acceptable standard of care of his wife.

Ray Wolfe Jr. is seeking compensatory and punitive damages with pre- and post-judgment interest. He is being represented by Robert P. Welsh.

The case has been assigned to Circuit Judge Paul Zakaib Jr.
