Jenkins looks back at 2021, reflects on his year as Chief Justice
CHARLESTON – As my year as Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Appeals of West Virginia ends, I thank those who contributed to the state court system’s progress in 2021. I would also like to highlight the ways in which access and service were improved for all who are served by the courts and the judicial system.
Don't forget the opioid epidemic as we battle COVID-19 pandemic
Between April 2020 and April 2021, drugs – mostly synthetic opioids such as fentanyl – took the lives of more than 100,000 of our sons and daughters, loved ones and neighbors, community members and friends.
You can’t Build Back Better with hidden taxes!
U.S. Senator Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.) has a better understanding of inflation than the average layman and is speaking out about the dangerous inflationary potential of the Build Back Better Act.
Manchin needs to hold line against BBB
The budget reconciliation bill being considered in the Senate is overflowing with harmful government policies. Reckless spending that quickens inflation is only the tip of the spear. Other components that tinker with the free market will have lasting consequences that are more challenging to undo.
Morrisey: Prioritize safety and security this holiday season
Stay alert, be careful and, above all, have a very Merry Christmas and a happy holiday season.
Boycotting the boycotters!
The great thing about being “woke” is that you can pretend to be virtuous without paying a price for it. It’s much harder to make actual contributions to society while being attacked by nitpicking nitwits and ideologues.
Do you know who I am? I’m a judge unfit for the bench!
Hardy Circuit Judge C. Carter Williams is unfit to be a judge. He should do himself and us a favor by resigning from the bench. Then, he’ll have time to figure out who he is.
Preserve the filibuster!
The “Freedom to Vote Act” would not protect the integrity of elections or preserve the rights of legitimate voters. If a filibuster is the only way to stop it, then filibuster it.
Standing firm on the Second Amendment
I will not allow the far left to run roughshod over our citizens’ gun rights. If President Biden follows through on his overbroad and far-reaching proposals, we will take swift legal action.
Mr. Manchin went to Washington
Sen. Joe Manchin could be the man who saves the filibuster, but will he? We sure hope so. We want our senior senator to fight for what his constituents believe in and support, just like Senator Smith did. After all, Smith was doing his constituents' bidding, not that of his party.
Enforcement actions needed to reduce fentanyl overdoses
It will take a collaborative, concerted effort to combat fentanyl trafficking and reduce senseless death to help our nation and West Virginia reach their full potential.
Democrats are stuck with election law they passed themselves
“This policy has been in state code for the past 29 years, without objection from either political party or any elected official,” comments former state Republican Party Chairwoman Melody Potter. “Republican presidential candidates have won West Virginia every election since 2000, which positions them first on the ballot.
Judgment day for Magistrate Clayton
“Hardest pill I had to swallow was learning that, no matter how good you could be to someone, no matter how much you love them, they can & will turn their back on you & there’s absolutely nothing you can do but suck it up & keep moving forward.”
Criticism of Biden economic policy ... from an unlikely source
The bottom line is that all the wage increases Americans enjoyed over the last five years have evaporated and they’re now making less, in inflation-adjusted terms, than they were before the pandemic. This translates to an annual $1,000 loss for the average West Virginia household.
West Virginia should be split into north and south for U.S. House districts
HUNTINGTON – Anyone who cares about West Virginia should pay close attention to our upcoming congressional redistricting, where the Mountain State will go from three members in the U.S. House of Representatives to two.
It’s time to let it go, WorkForce West Virginia
These are strange times, and lots of people – in both the public and the private sector – are making things up as they go along. They’re improvising because they have to.
It's the same trick over and over again
West Virginia AG Patrick Morrisey is seeing a surge in fentanyl coming into our state and is considering suing the Biden administration for its failure to interdict the drug at the U.S.-Mexico border.
Miller on Ways and Means is a win for West Virginia businesses
Rep. Carol Miller is well positioned as our congresswoman to help us here at home. Through the Ways and Means Committee, West Virginians and their businesses have a much-needed seat at an important table to effect positive change and work to create new opportunities.
Manchin, Capito show bipartisan deal possible
While the infrastructure negotiations in Washington might have pivoted to include a broader group of negotiators, West Virginia’s senators, Democrat Joe Manchin and Republican Shelley Moore Capito, deserve recognition for the progress and achievements made toward striking a bipartisan infrastructure deal.
Fixing FERC pivotal to West Virginia’s economic development
We must all encourage the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission to fix its review process, giving companies a clear path to invest in critical energy infrastructure so West Virginians can continue delivering the resources necessary to responsibly power our nation.
