How to eat free at Bob Evans

“At Bob Evans, we treat strangers like friends and friends like family.”

That’s the company philosophy of Bob Evans restaurants. The chain prides itself on its “ability to treat guests and employees how they deserve to be treated.”

Of course, even friends and family members act like idiots occasionally. At such times, treating them “how they deserve to be treated” may not be the best policy.

Calling a customer an idiot is almost always inadvisable — even when he appears to be one.

Take Joel Acey, for instance. Call him an idiot and you’ll have a lawsuit on your hands.

The hostess at the Charleston Bob Evans allegedly did just that, almost exactly two years ago, on Dec. 26, 2010, when Acey came in with his child and asked to be seated in the front of the restaurant.

According to Acey, the hostess led him to a place in the rear, instead, and uttered the words “You damned idiot,” as she slammed two menus down on the table.
Maybe it was an off time, the wait staff was not at full capacity, and the front of the restaurant was not “open for service.” Maybe the hostess wasn’t in a “customer’s-always-right” kind of mood. Or maybe Acey has left out a crucial part of the story. Only he and the hostess know that part of the controversy, if there is anything to know.

When Acey isn’t dining out, he seems to enjoy social media. He has two “favorites” on his personal Facebook page: a page for his company, Acey Renovations, and another page which seems dedicated to a certain part of the female anatomy.

Extenuating circumstances or not, if the hostess called Acey an idiot, she shouldn’t have. However, the fact remains that Acey was not satisfied by a manager’s apology or an offer of a free meal and is now suing for compensatory and punitive damages – for being called something that one could argue may not have been far from the mark.

Too many facts missing to make an accurate assessment of this one.   Has the waitress commented, or the restaurant management?

    • Smile1MoreX

What’s the difference if they commented or not? Let’s say that she did in fact call him a name, do you really feel that warrants a lawsuit?! I think not! I wonder how he would feel if he & his company were sued over something so ridiculous?

  • Sunnyparks

Freedom of speech, if you don’t like it repeat the hostess and walk out. That’s how it’s handled by real men, you reading this Acey you idiot?

  • Reportbaddrivers

Best way to deal with people like this is to NOT employ their services, and to tell your family and friends the same thing.  After all, he might sue YOU for hiring him to do something at your home and then telling him you don’t like the work he did for you.

    What an idiot.

What an idiot!  With everything that is wrong in America nothing gets me more pissed off than bogus lawsuits.  If I could change one thing I would make the people who bring these senseless suits to court pay the defendants lawyer bills if they lose.  Then lets see how many of these suits get brought to court.

      I agree 100%…

Can I sue him when his company is renovating my home and put a scratch on my cheap a$$ wood floors  ? Because he is an idiot ?

  • troutcreek

Another WV spook that wants to eat for free. Go to his facebook page and BASH HIM!!!!

    • Smile1MoreX

I like ‘Reportbaddrivers’ (commentor above) idea to make sure no one hires him or his company. Fb would be good to spread the word about that.

Bob Evans pays their servers $2.23 an hour. So much for being part of their FAMILY, much less a mere friend or stranger. These working poor are held hostage to owning greedmongers in the restaurant industry.

Unfortunately for restaurant industry employees their choice is either work for slave wages or watch your family starve. Many have no vehicle and must walk or bike to work. None can afford to heat their home adequately. Few enjoy bare essentials — health care being a far away dream for their children, never can these serf-class parents afford THE LUXURY of medical insurance.

DO YOU REALLY EXPECT TO GENERATE SYMPATHY FOR THE BOB EVANS CORPORATION. If so, search the dictionary between XXXX and syphilis. Do a good deed, generate conversation and interest toward improving the lot in life of restaurant industry employees. THEY ARE PART OF THE INVISIBLE WORKING POOR CLASS FEW IN THE LEGAL PROFESSION AND NONE AMONG OUR ELITE GROUP OF SUPREME COURT JUSTICES WOULD EVER RECOGNIZE.

Understood. We tip at least 20%, even when we don’t get tea refills. OK, no more than 20% when no tea refills, just take order and bring out food. Good money for a few minutes work.

Waitresses depend upon tips to supplement their wages so I would think if she called this guy an idiot there is more to that story than what we are hearing. Perhaps he had been bothering this or one of the other waitresses over a period of time that would make him not only an idiot but possibly a pervert as well!
