BECKLEY – A Summers County man is suing over claims he was injured by an improperly performed catheterization.
Robert Linvel Williams and Reva Williams filed a lawsuit Aug. 15 in Raleigh Circuit Court against Raleigh General Hospital, citing medical negligence.
According to the complaint, on Oct. 9, 2010, Robert Linvel Williams experienced weakness, nausea and vomiting, and was transported by EMS to Beckley Appalachian Regional Hospital, which transferred him to Raleigh General Hospital. Williams says on Oct. 10, 2010, a nurse attempted a Foley catheterization procedure and erroneously inflated the balloon in the plaintiff's urethra instead of the bladder, causing injury and bleeding.
The complaint states this negligence resulted in injury, hemorrhage, blood clotting, heavy bodily swelling, permanent impairment to ambulation and complications that required multiple blood transfusions, extensive hospitalization and rehabilitation, thousands of dollars in home access enhancements and medical bills in excess of $127,000.
The defendant is accused of medical negligence and vicarious liability, and Reva Williams is suing for loss of consortium.
The Williamses seek more than $50,000 in damages. They are represented by attorney James J. Palmer III of Bluefield.
