The good fight for our freedoms

Ourview

Freedom is a fragile thing and is never more than one generation away from extinction. It is not ours by inheritance; it must be fought for and defended constantly by each generation ...

Ronald Reagan’s famous words from his first inaugural speech as governor of California resonate even more today when a threat we face as a people comes from within: from a leader who does not understand our nation’s heritage of exceptionalism and does not respect the document that defines it, our U.S. Constitution.

The man who should be leading our fight for freedom and our defense of liberty is instead an opponent in the battle.

We are fortunate to have leaders at the state level with the courage and cunning required to oppose a usurper.

West Virginia Attorney General Patrick Morrisey helped lead the opposition to the Internal Revenue Service’s tortuous interpretation of one provision of the misnamed Affordable Care Act, resulting in a recent Appeals Court ruling against it.

“Regardless of whether you like a law or not, the President and his administration cannot decide on their own which portions of laws should be adhered to and which should be overlooked,” Morrisey said when the decision was announced.

This week, Morrisey filed suit challenging the President’s arbitrary and capricious approach to his executive duties.

“This lawsuit simply asks the Court to require the Obama administration to follow the laws and restore the constitutional boundaries on presidential authority,” he said.

“The President has brazenly declared that he will continue to ignore the law when it comes to regulating the use of coal, the ACA, immigration or any other issue he deems inconvenient, and he has dared those who disagree to ‘sue me,’ ” Morrisey said. “We have accepted the President’s invitation.”

Let’s not be the generation that inherited freedom but let it wither. Let’s take Ronald Reagan’s words to heart and fight for it.
