WEST VIRGINIA SUPREME COURT OF APPEALS: College of Law Students to Attend Supreme Court Docket Virtually

Court

West Virginia Supreme Court of Appeals issued the following announcement on Mar. 18.

Each year the Supreme Court of Appeals of West Virginia makes a trip to the West Virginia University College of Law in Morgantown as part of the Court’s effort to build greater awareness of the judicial system and the work of the Court. Due to Covid-19 the Court will not be able to be at the College of Law in person this year, but the special docket of cases will be heard virtually.

“We will miss being on campus next week and the opportunity to meet in person with the students, but the Justices are committed to continuing our outreach efforts even in a Covid environment. Working with the law school, we’ve been able to make special arrangements so that the students and the public can watch the oral arguments virtually,” said Chief Justice Evan Jenkins. Documents for the cases on the March 23 argument docket have been posted online (http://www.courtswv.gov/supreme-court/calendar/2021/Dockets/mar-23-21ad.html). Students are studying the cases now and, on March 23, will be able to watch the arguments on the Court’s YouTube Channel through a link on the main page of the West Virginia Judiciary website (www.courtswv.gov). All Supreme Court arguments are livestreamed and recordings are available as soon as is practicable on the West Virginia Judiciary YouTube channel.

Throughout the Covid-19 pandemic, the Supreme Court has taken steps to keep all courts open and operational while balancing the need to protect the health of the public and court employees,” said Chief Justice Jenkins. “I am very happy that we’ve been able to coordinate this outreach effort so the students will not miss out on the educational opportunity watching live arguments.”

As in past years, the Court also will judge the finals of the Baker Cup Moot Court appellate advocacy competition at 1 p.m. The final competition will also be livestreamed. “By setting aside a day for law students each year, the Court reaffirms its commitment to the future of our profession,” said Chief Justice Jenkins. “The Court cares deeply about supporting the work of the College of Law.” The Court will hear oral arguments in the following cases: Rule 20 argument 10:00 a.m.

Tessa Ann Jordan and Lynn Jordan v. Joseph Jenkins and Stephanie Jenkins, No. 19-0890, and Safeco Insurance Company of America and Liberty Mutual Insurance Company v. Joseph Jenkins and Stephanie Jenkins, No. 19-0899 Rule 19 argument 11:20 a.m. Brian Dement v. Karen Pszczolkowski, Superintendent, No. 19-0785 11:40 a.m. State of West Virginia v.
