MORGANTOWN — West Virginia University alumnus Monte Williams is looking forward to his six-year term on the WVU Alumni Association Board of Directors.

Williams, a Morgantown resident and attorney with Steptoe & Johnson, said it means a great deal to him to be appointed to serve on the board.

"I’ve invested a lot in the university and the university has invested a lot in me," Williams said in an interview with The West Virginia Record. "It seems right to do what I can to work on its behalf."

Williams said he has big plans during his term.

"I first need to learn what I don’t know," Willims said. "Second, I must determine how I can help based on what’s needed. Third, be an active participant, i.e., give meaningful thought and time to the organization never losing sight of the mission."

Williams said he loves to bring critical thinking and analysis from his career as an attorney to the board.

Williams is a three-time alumnus of WVU, receiving both his bachelor's and master's degrees from the Eberly College of Arts and sciences. He then graduated from the College of Law.

Williams is the leader of the General Litigation Practice Group at Steptoe & Johnson in Morgantown. He represents government agencies, as well as individual clients involving professional liability, premises liability, personal injury and contract disputes.

“Our new board members represent a wide range of expertise and success across very different industries and geographic locations,” Board Chair Todd Mount said. “Their unique backgrounds, talents and perspectives will help us to continue improving and maximizing the association’s engagement with our alumni."

Mount said he is looking forward to the diverse group of board members.

"I look forward to working with them to advance the interests of West Virginia University, the WVU Alumni Association and our more than 200,000 graduates," Mount said.
