In the United States District Court for the Southern District of West Virginia, a lawsuit has been filed by J.R. against Chad Shafer under Civil Action No: 2:24-cv-00159 on March 28, 2024. The plaintiff, represented by Paul E. Stroebel of Stroebel & Stroebel, PLLC, alleges that the defendant violated her constitutional rights and committed sexual harassment, assault, and battery.

The plaintiff claims that on March 29, 2022, Shafer, who was then a police officer for the Dunbar Police Department and acting within his scope of employment, sexually harassed and assaulted her. The alleged incident took place after a night out at a local bar where Shafer offered to drive an intoxicated J.R. home. The damages include emotional distress and trauma caused by the defendant's actions.

J.R. is seeking judgment against Chad Shafer for his alleged violations of her constitutional rights under 42 U.S.C. § 1983 and the Fourth and Fourteenth Amendments to the United States Constitution as well as under West Virginia common law. She also seeks compensation for damages resulting from sexual harassment, assault, and battery.
