CHARLESTON - A man is suing Charleston Area Medical Center after he claims a physician was negligent during caring for him.

Dr. John M. Johnson was also named as a defendant in the suit.

On May 7, 2012, Travis Cox presented to the defendant's emergency room for a severe right forearm laceration with significant bleeding, according to a complaint filed Dec. 9 in Kanawha Circuit Court.

Cox claims Johnson negligently failed to appreciate the severity of the laceration to his forearm and the risk of complications from improper treatment of potential arterial and tendon injuries.

Due to the defendants' negligence, Cox was forced to undergo several additional major surgical procedures on his right arm and was rendered unable to work at his occupation and earn a living as a construction laborer as a result of the severe and permanent injuries to his arm, according to the suit.

Cox claims he was forced to suffer great physical and mental pain and suffering and was forced to incur significant medical expenses.

Due to the defendants' negligence, Cox suffered a severe and permanent deformity, according to the suit.

Cox is seeking compensatory and punitive damages with pre- and post-judgment interest. Cox is represented by Robert P. Welsh of the Masters Law Firm LC.

The case has been assigned to Circuit Judge Jennifer Bailey.
