HUNTINGTON -- A Cabell County woman is suing her past employer, alleging discrimination.
Tiara Carper filed a lawsuit Feb. 10 in Cabell Circuit Court against DirecTV LLC, doing business as DirecTV Customer Services Inc., citing retaliatory discharge, race discrimination, violation of wage payment and collection act, negligent infliction of emotional distress and outrage.
The complaint states on May 14, 2012, the defendant hired Carper as a customer service representative. The plaintiff says, beginning in April 2013, she experienced improper treatment from a previous supervisor that she believed was based on an improper race-based animus and made a report to human resources about the conduct in September 2013.
The plaintiff was terminated on Jan. 23, 2014, and believes she was fired for filing a report of racial discrimination, according to the complaint.
Carper is seeking actual damages, general and compensatory damages, punitive damages, attorney's fees and court costs.
The plaintiff is being represented by Huntington attorneys Hoyt Glazer, Ben Sheridan and Mitchell L. Klein of Klein, Sheridan & Glazer LC. The case has been assigned to Circuit Judge Christopher D. Chiles.
