MADISON -- Four Boone County property owners who live in Texas are suing over claims coal mine activity caused damage to their properties.

Ronnie and Dena Walker Smith, husband and wife, Helen McCormick Barker and William McCormick filed lawsuits Jan. 16 and Feb. 7 in Boone Circuit Court against Coal River Mining LLC, Loadout LLC and Covington Coal Company LLC, citing negligence.

According to the complaint, the plaintiffs are owners of properties on Fork Creek Road and Dickens Road that began to experience cracks and subsidence in June 2012 when the defendants began using explosives to blast through bedrock near the plaintiffs' properties.

The plaintiffs are being represented in the case by attorneys John H. Skaggs of The Calwell Practice LC and G. Patrick Jacobs. The cases have been assigned to Circuit Judge William S. Thompson.
