Mine worker sues after losing job twice

LOGAN -- A coal-mining employee is suing his former employer after he lost his job twice.


Joshua Meade filed a lawsuit Feb. 20 in Logan Circuit Court against Kentucky Fuel Corporation, citing labor, safety and wage law violations.

The lawsuit states Meade worked in the Rich Creek, Lyburn, operation and was laid off in January 2012. He and others filed a lawsuit regarding wage law violations. Meade was rehired in Feb. 13, 2013, but was fired 10 days later because he was a part of the lawsuit. He had also, in that 10-day period, reported safety violations regarding the truck he was operating, the complaint said.

Meade is seeking damages to cover lost wages and benefits, back pay, front pay, damages for public embarrassment and emotional distress, punitive damages, pre and post-judgment interest, injunctive relief and court costs.

He is being represented by Gregory Chiartas of Freeman & Chiartas. The case has been assigned to Circuit Court Judge Roger L. Perry.
