BECKLEY -- A Fayette County woman is suing over claims she was severely injured during surgery to repair a bleeding ulcer.

Crystal and James Ellison filed a lawsuit March 24 in Raleigh Circuit Court against Courtney K. Pettiford M.D. and Beckley Vascular Associates PLLC, doing business as River Region Surgical Specialists, citing medical malpractice.

According to the complaint, on April 11, 2012, Crystal Ellison presented to Raleigh General Hospital and was diagnosed with a bleeding giant duodenal ulcer. Ellison says on April 17, 2012, Pettiford, employed by Beckley Vascular Associates, performed surgery to repair the bleeding source but injured the plaintiff's common bile duct, which required further reparative surgeries.

Crystal and James Ellison seeking damages in an amount to be determined by the court.

They are being represented in the case by attorneys W. Stuart Calwell Jr., Melissa H. Luce and Benjamin D. Adams of The Calwell Practice LC.
