CHARLESTON – Jackson Kelly attorney Thomas J. Hurney recently was presented with The Robert L. Ghiz Award for Outstanding Service to the Physician Community of West Virginia by the West Virginia Mutual Insurance Company (WVMIC) at the 2014 Healthcare Summit of the West Virginia Medical Association.
The award recognizes “those individuals that have dedicated themselves to altruistic service, leadership and advocacy for the West Virginia physician community.”
Mutual President Austin Wallace presented the award to Hurney and fellow attorney Don R. Sensabaugh Jr., in recognition of work on behalf of the medical community to secure civil justice reforms that stabilized the liability environment for health care providers and enabled the formation of the WVMIC, which is owned by West Virginia physicians.
“No one in West Virginia has devoted more time to the well-being of West Virginia physicians, thereby promoting the health and well-being of West Virginia citizens than Tom Hurney ... He should be recognized in the medical community and elsewhere for his service to our state” remarked Tamara Lively-Huffman, Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of West Virginia Mutual Insurance Company.
Hurney is Practice Group Leader of Jackson Kelly’s Health Care and Finance Practice Group. He has represented physicians, hospitals and healthcare facilities for more than 30 years. He is a Fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers, a member of the American Board of Trial Advocates and is frequently recognized in publications such as Best Lawyers in America, Chambers USA and West Virginia Super Lawyers.
