CHARLESTON – A disabled man is suing a West Virginia school district, alleging he was not hired due to his being deaf.
Scott Hottle filed suit Nov. 14 in Kanawha Circuit Court, against the Kanawha County Board of Education.
According to the complaint, Hottle communicates using sign language, lip reading and writing English. He has a bachelors degree in education, as well as a master’s in deaf education, the suit states, in addition to more than 20 years in deaf education. The suit says he applied more than three times in 2013 and 2014 to the Kanawha County School District for deaf education positions.
According to the suit, Hottle was not hired, and in all cases a person who obtained the position was not qualified. The plaintiff believes this was due to his disability, and he alleges the school district violated several laws regarding persons with disabilities.
Hottle seeks punitive damages caused by the plaintiff’s alleged unlawful acts.
