Woman blames sister's brain damage, death on nursing home

Nursinghome

CHARLESTON – A Kanawha County woman is suing over claims her sister sustained brain damage while a resident in a nursing home.

Kay Moffatt, personal representative of the estate of Margaret Jane Coen, filed a lawsuit Dec. 2, 2014, in Kanawha Circuit Court against 302 Cedar Ridge Road Operations, doing business as Cedar Ridge Center, and Genesis Healthcare, citing wrongful death.

According to the complaint, Coen became a resident of the defendant facility in 2013, during which time she sustained injuries including multiple falls, urinary tract infections, dehydration and episodes of hypoglycemia resulting in brain damage, all of which contributed to her death Jan. 31, 2014. The complaint states the defendant was aware of insufficient staff and supplies.

Moffatt is represented by attorneys Andrew L. Paternostro and Jeff D. Stewart of The Bell Law Firm in Charleston. The case has been assigned to Circuit Judge James C. Stucky.
