Couple cites airport parking lot hazard

BECKLEY — A Raleigh County couple has sued the county airport and two affiliated entities, alleging negligence.

Alicia M. Phillips and Christian Lee Phillips of Coal City filed a lawsuit March 6 in Raleigh Circuit Court against Raleigh County Memorial Airport, the Raleigh County Airport Authority and Beckley-Raleigh County Transportation Authority Inc., alleging the defendants allowed dangerous parking conditions to place employees in jeopardy.

According to the complaint, on March 7, 2013, Alicia M. Phillips, a U.S. Transportation Security Administration employee, reported for work at Raleigh County Memorial Airport in Beaver where employees are required to park in a designated area. The suit states the parking area had been unattended for several days, allowing large amounts of ice and snow to build up and create a hazardous condition for drivers and pedestrians. Phillips slipped an fell, injuring her back, hips and legs, according to the suit.

Alicia M. Phillips alleges the defendants breached their duty of care by allowing the lot to remain unattended and were aware of the conditions. She cites gross negligence and negligent misrepresentation.

The couple seeks: compensatory damages for medical expenses and loss of income; general damages for pain, suffering, mental anguish, injury and inconvenience, loss of companionship and enjoyment of life; emotional distress; attorney fees; and costs.

They are represented by attorney Robert P. Dunlap II of Beckley.
