CHARLESTON – Boone County Magistrate Charles M. Byrnside will retire from the West Virginia judicial system, effective June 30.

He was elected in 2004 and re-elected in 2008 and 2012.

“He has served with honor and distinction, and I hope he enjoys his retirement,” said Circuit Judge William S. Thompson of the 25th Judicial Circuit (Boone and Lincoln counties) .

Byrnside said it’s been an honor to represent the citizens of Boone County as magistrate.

"It’s been an honor to work with Judge (Jay) Hoke and Judge Thompson as well as the staff members of the Supreme Court," he said. "I’d like to thank my staff and Magistrate (Porter) Snodgrass for all their support during my time as magistrate.”

Thompson, with the agreement of Hoke, has appointed Sam R. Burns to fill the magistrate position until the next election in 2016.

Burns, 64, is retired from the coal mining industry.

“I’m very honored to be appointed. I want to do my level best for the people of Boone County,” he said. “I will work day and night diligently to learn the position and help the people.”

“Magistrate Byrnside was one of our very good magistrates," said Janie Moore, director of the Supreme Court’s Division of Magistrate Court Services. "His laid-back demeanor was excellent when dealing with the public, and his easy-going spirit will be missed by everyone."
