Bowman named dean of WVU College of Law

MORGANTOWN – Greg Bowman, an expert in international trade law and award winning-faculty member, has been named permanent dean of West Virginia University's College of Law, effective May 1.

“I’ve worked with Greg for several years and have always known that he is an exceptional legal scholar, teacher and leader,” Provost Joyce McConnell said in announcing the appointment. “We conducted a national search for our next dean at the College of Law and Greg just rose naturally to the top of the pool.”

Bowman has beem interim dean since McConnell was appointed provost by President Gordon Gee in June 2014.  Bowman has been a member of the faculty since 2009 and served as associate dean for academic affairs for a year before his interim appointment.

Gee, who was dean of the College for two years before he first became president of West Virginia University in 1981, applauded Bowman’s appointment.

"Greg is an international leader in global legal education,” Gee said. “He is also an award-winning teacher himself. We are extremely fortunate to have his expertise and enthusiasm as we focus on being a truly international University.”

Bowman was named professor of the year at the college of law in 2011 and won a WVU Foundation award for outstanding teaching in 2014.  In addition to being a nationally recognized expert in international trade law and remedies, he directs several study abroad programs in the college and works with the Jessup International Moot Court.

“I am so proud to be a part of this faculty and this university,” Bowman said.  “We have exceptional faculty and staff at WVU Law, and we attract exceptional students who get a top-notch legal education.  I’m really excited to lead the College going forward.”

The WVU College of Law was founded in 1878 and has been accredited by the American Bar Association since 1923. It is currently a nationally ranked Top 100 law school by U.S. News and World Report.
