Hurney

CHARLESTON – Jackson Kelly PLLC attorney Thomas J. Hurney Jr. was elected vice president of the Association of Defense Trial Attorneys (ADTA) at its 74th Annual meeting in Ponte Vedra, Fla., on April 25.

Hurney was the Secretary and a past member of the Executive Council of the ADTA and a member since 1992.  Matthew Bailey of Baton Rouge, La., was elected President and Fred Raschke was elected President Elect.

The ADTA is a national organization of defense lawyers which accepts members by invitation only, with only one prime member in any city with a population of less than one million. The ADTA invites lawyers who are “proven and recognized successful professionals possessing the highest skill level of a defense trial attorney in civil cases.”

Jackson Kelly has a long relationship with the ADTA, dating to former firm litigation head, W.T. Shaffer.  Steve Crislip was elected to membership of the ADTA in 1984 and held several offices, culminating in his election to the Presidency in 2006.

Hurney is a trial lawyer and leads the firm’s Healthcare and Finance Practice Group.  He has broad experience litigating and trying commercial, wrongful death and traumatic injury cases in state and federal courts.  He is a Fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers and an Associate member of the American Board of Trial Attorneys.  In addition to the ADTA, he is a longtime member of DRI and IADC and the Defense Trial Counsel of West Virginia (DTCWV).  He is a past President of DTCWV, which named him its Lawyer of the Year in 2014.
