Woman accuses Wayne school board of discrimination

Wayneboe

WAYNE – A Wayne woman is suing the county's Board of Education for discriminating against her.

Beginning in 2011, Susan Kelley-Jarrell applied for a health occupations instructor at Spring Valley High School, but she did not receive the position, according to a complaint filed in Wayne Circuit Court.

Kelley-Jarrell claims from Feb. 3, 2012, through May 29, 2012, she worked as a substitute teacher for Tolsia High School, and, following completion of her assignment as a substitute teacher at Tolsia, she against applied for the position of health occupations instructor on June 27, 2012.

The defendant again failed to hire the plaintiff as a health occupations instructor and, over the next year, Kelley-Jarrell sought and applied for employment as a health occupations instructor with Wayne County Schools, according to the suit.

Kelley-Jarrell claims the defendants did not hire her for the position and she continued as a substitute teacher.

The defendant has hired lesser-qualified individuals to fill the health occupations instructor position in December 2013 and in August, Kelley-Jarrell applied again.

Kelley-Jarrell claims she was one of four applications who applied for the position  and the three other applicants were under the age of 40.

The defendant did not hire her for the position and hired a person under the age of 40, according to the suit.

Kelley-Jarrell claims in February, she applied for the health occupations instructor at Tolsia and was interviewed on Feb. 13.

The defendant hired a lesser-qualified person for the position, discriminating against Kelley-Jarrell for her age.

Kelley-Jarrell is seeking compensatory and punitive damages with pre- and post-judgment interest. She is being represented by Hoyt Glazer, Ben Sheridan and Mitchell L. Klein of Klein, Sheridan & Glazer LC.

The case is assigned to Circuit Judge Darrell Pratt.
