Mother unsuccessfully fights SSAC over son's suspension

WINFIELD – The mother of a Hurricane High School basketball player was unsuccessful in her attempt to obtain a temporary restraining order against the state Secondary School Activities Commission which forced her son to sit out the first two games of the season.

Putnam Circuit Judge O.C. "Hobby" Spaulding denied the order on Dec. 15, the day of the Redskins' first game of the season against Ripley in the annual Hoops Classic tournament at the Charleston Civic Center.

Hurricane senior T.J. Farley received two technical fouls, which resulted in an ejection and two-game suspension, in the Redskins' final game of the 2004-05 season on March 5.

His mother, Robin Rena Farley, petitioned the court for the restraining order, and listed SSAC Commissioner Butch Powell as the defendant. It was filed by attorneys D. Scott Tyree and J. Robert Leslie.

In the filing, his mother claimed that after the SSAC reviewed tape of the game, it said the suspension could be overturned if the official withdrew the technical foul.

Ollie D. Hunting, the referee who called the foul against Farley, did so in a letter dated Dec. 7.

"There may have been incidental contact on the play in question," he said in the letter, which was including in the filing. "I would like to rescind the special report submitted."

Still, the SSAC refused to withdraw the foul and ordered the suspension be served, the filing said.

Farley sat out Hurricane's Hoops Classic game against Ripley and a Dec. 16 home game against Putnam County rival Poca.

Now a senior, the 6-foot- 4 Farley averaged 8.7 points per game last season. He scored nine points for the 'Skins in his first game this season, an 89-58 loss to George Washington on Dec. 20.
