WINFIELD - A former police chief in Hurricane settled his lawsuit with the city for $20,000.
Lawrence Foster claimed in a 2004 complaint that he was wrongfully terminated after almost 20 years with the Hurricane police.
Hurricane officials said that he was fired for his conduct as chief and were ready to prove he committed crimes like tax evasion and using the city's money to rent construction equipment for personal use.
They added that his actions led to federal investigations of the police department.
Putnam Circuit Judge Ed Eagloski presided over the case until it was settled with the help of lawyer John Cyrus, who mediated.
Foster was represented by Francis Curnutte III of Charleston law firm Hunt and Serreno. Johnnie Brown of Charleston's Pullin, Fowler and Flanagan.
Foster, 57, first claimed he was fired because of his age, though he later withdrew that complaint.
According to the settlement, both parties will pay their own legal fees and Foster will remain eligible for retirement benefits.
