Horse club sues treasurer over more embezzled money

WINFIELD – A Putnam County horse club says its former treasurer still owes $60,000 after embezzling more than $125,000.

Winfield Riding Club filed its lawsuit against Brenda Wolfe on Nov. 22 in Putnam Circuit Court.

In December 2004, the club discovered Wolfe had written checks to herself out of club funds totaling about $65,125. The complaint says she was charged and pled guilty to a felony criminal offense. She was given a stay of sentence and ordered to report to probation and to pay restitution with interest.

The complaint says Wolfe has been making regular payments of $2,000 per month.

Since the original charge, however, the club says it has established that the amount of money Wolfe took from it to totals $125,125. It says Wolfe still owes $60,000, and it seeks that amount plus court costs, legal interest and other relief.

The riding club is being represented by attorney James B. Atkins, and the case has been assigned to Circuit Judge O.C. "Hobby" Spaulding.
