Woman accuses AEP of gender discrimination

HUNTINGTON - A Cabell County woman is suing her employer, claiming she was fired because of her gender.

April D. Jackson filed a suit against American Electric Power and Michael Stephens. Jackson was employed by AEP in 1985, as an administrative assistant.

On Oct. 16, 2001, Jackson was informed that her position was changing due to the work scheduling group, but nothing would change except her immediate supervisor.

Stephens became her supervisor. Jackson was fired on May 3, 2002 by Stephens. Around Jan. 10, 2005, Jackson learned her position was filled by a male who was younger in age, had less seniority and was less experienced than her.

Jackson is claiming she was fired because of gender discrimination, despite good job performance reviews. The suit states that is Jackson was not female and would not have been fired.

The suit states AEP engaged in unlawful discriminatory practices as defined by the West Virginia Human Rights Act.

As a result of her termination, Jackson has suffered several emotional distress, loss of wages and costs of litigation.
