CHARLESTON - A Raleigh County man has filed a malpractice suit against Charleston Area Medical Center, seeking $10 million in compensation for injuries he claimed he incurred during a heart catherization.
Matthew Royal filed a suit Feb. 23 in Kanawha Circuit Court, naming CAMC, Dr. Jashvantlal Thakkar and John Doe as defendants.
On April 6, 2005, Royal went to a hospital with severe chest pains. He was flown to CAMC on April 7, where a cardiac catherization was performed by Thakkar.
The suit says the catherization was done in a way that caused Royal severe physical complications. As a result of Thakkar's negligence, Royal needed emergency surgery and excision of organ tissues. He also needed a prolonged recovery period and continues to be in chronic pain.
Also as a result of Thakkar's negligence, Royal suffers a chronic mental illness and needs extensive medical care, the suit says.
Royal, through his counsel Belinda S. Morton, seeks $10 million to help with his medical costs, past and present and to compensate him for his injuries and pain.
The case has been assigned to Judge Irene Berger.
