MORGANTOWN - Monongalia County teachers and staff members who took part in a strike earlier this month might have a day's pay taken away.
Circuit Court Judge Robert Stone refused to issue an injunction March 28 that would stop the district from withholding one day's pay, meaning nearly 70 teachers and staff members could be docked.
According to Monongalia County Superintendent Frank Devono, the money will be taken from this week's paychecks.
The West Virginia branch of the American Federation of Teachers and the West Virginia School Service Personnel Association sought the injunction to stop the pay cut, saying it violates the policy manual to require a doctor's excuse for that day.
The lawsuit also states that the administration should ask employees why they took the day off before garnishing their wages.
According to media reports, 300 employees failed to report to work on March 6 in a silent objection to a pay raise of 2 percent. State legislators eventually decided to give the employees a 3.5 percent pay increase.
