Justices speak at Wheeling Chamber event

WHEELING – Three of West Virginia's Supreme Court Justices were on hand May 16 for the Annual Judicial Update luncheon sponsored by the Wheeling-Area Chamber of Commerce.

The luncheon, held at Wheeling Park's Stone Room, was led by Chamber President Terry Sterling, who gave special recognition to the law firm of Dinsmore & Shohl for its contribution in hosting the event.

Chief Justice Robin Jean Davis and Justices Spike Maynard and Brent Benjamin spoke to the crowd.

Davis said her title only means that she "does the paperwork," and that she carries no additional power or weightier voice on the bench.

"The five powers do not always agree, but they disagreed in a professional manner," she said.

Davis talked about how the state Supreme Court is the busiest appellate court in the country, primarily because of workers' compensation cases.

Maynard followed Davis and talked about her efforts to improve the living conditions of children in the state.

"Our courts must focus on the needs of the children," he said. "Fate puts us in places to affect other's lives."

Benjamin said he has enjoyed his time on the bench, saying he "loves going into work."

"The justices may disagree, but they are not disagreeable," he said.
