High-rise sued after woman suffers injury in hallway

CHARLESTON - A Kanawha County woman has filed a suit against the managers of a local high-rise public housing development after she was injured in the hallway of one of the buildings.

Verna Black filed a suit June 26 in Kanawha Circuit Court against Charleston-Kanawha Housing Authority, which operates a development on Kanawha Boulevard in Charleston.

The suit also names ServPro of North Kanawha Valley Inc., Classic Construction Company Inc. and John Doe ServiceMaster as defendants.

According to the suit, a fire damaged part of a hallway Dec. 13, 2005, at the Carroll Terrace Apartments, where Black lived. The suit says ServPro of North Kanawha Valley Inc., Classic Construction Company, Inc., and John Doe ServiceMaster were contracted to repair the fire damage.

Black claims she was walking through the hallway Dec. 16, 2005, when her feet "became entangled in plastic sheeting," and she fell. The sheeting was provided when the contractors were repairing the fire damage.

Black claims she has incurred medical expenses and lost wages because of her injuries. She seeks compensatory and punitive damages.

Attorney G. Patrick Jacobs is representing Black. The case has been assigned to Judge Jennifer Bailey Walker.
