Driver claims repaved road wasn't marked with bump hazard signage

CHARLESTON - A West Virginia woman has filed suit against a state paving company, after a bump on the road created during paving damaged the woman's vehicle.

Sharin Akhtar filed her complaint Sept. 11 in Kanawha Circuit Court against West Virginia Paving, Inc.

According to the suit, Akhtar was driving northbound on Quarrier Street on Sept. 14, 2006, heading towards Interstate 64, when she "hit a sharp bump caused by the road repaving/resurfacing."

Akhtar claims her car was damaged as a result of hitting the bump. She claims the company failed to post adequate warnings informing drivers of the hazards created by the repaving and resurfacing on Quarrier Street.

According to the suit, West Virginia Paving specifically failed to slope the transition area between the road surfaces, thereby leaving a significant and sharp edge, which could and did damage Akhtar's vehicle.

Akhtar claims she incurred more than $1,090 in property damages, and annoyance, aggravation and inconvenience.

Akhtar, through attorney Arik C. Parashos, seeks general and special compensatory damages.

The case has been assigned to Judge Paul Zakaib.
