Man sues former fiance over finances

MARTINSBURG - A Washington, D.C., man has filed a suit against his ex-fiance, seeking money he loaned to her while they were together.

Nevin Kelly filed a suit against Alyson Springer on Aug. 24 in Berkeley Circuit Court. Springer is a Berkeley County resident.

Kelly seeks more than $176,324 from Springer. According to the suit, Kelly and Springer met in 2002 and became romantically involved.

In April 2004, Springer opened Whiting's Neck Equestrian Center, which is also named as a defendant in the suit.

In June or July of that year, Kelly and Springer became engaged.

"Mr. Kelly made numerous financial advances to Ms. Springer for necessary repairs on the property and for the payment of the mortgage," the suit says. "Ms. Springer used a portion of the advancements for the operation of the center."

Kelly began advancing funds to Spring in July 2004 and continued through June of 2006.

According to the suit, most of the money was used for improvements to the property and payment of the mortgage.

"Mr. Kelly made the aforementioned advances with the intention that he would acquire an interest in the property after his marriage to Ms. Springer," the suit says.

However, in September 2006, Springer ended her engagement to Kelly.

Kelly claims Springer agreed to pay him if they did not marry, but she has not repaid any of the advances.

In the four-count suit, Kelly seeks $176,324 plus 9.75 percent interest. He also seeks punitive damages and court costs.

Attorney Dale A. Buck is representing Kelly. The case has been assigned to Judge David Sanders.
