CHARLESTON - A Kanawha County woman who was injured during the birth of her child has filed a suit against the doctors who treated her while she was in labor.
La Rhonda Garrett filed a suit Nov. 14 in Kanawha Circuit Court against Charleston Area Medical Center, Stephen Bush, M.D., and David Patton, M.D.
Bush and Patton both are doctors with specialties in obstetrics and gynecology.
According to the suit, a pregnant Garrett went to CAMC on Aug. 23, 2005, where she was induced because of gestational diabetes.
During her admission, it was noted that Garrett had an elevated blood pressure. She was induced and delivered by caesarean section. Her blood pressure continued to elevate.
On. Aug. 28, Garrett began experiencing a worsening of her vision. According to the suit, an opthalmological consult was obtained which revealed marked retinal ischemic changes and intraretinal hemorrhages due to hypertension.
"Her vision loss is permanent," the suit says.
Garrett claims Bush and Patton were negligent, careless, and acted with a reckless disregard.
Garrett seeks compensatory damages as allowed by the Medical Professional Liability Act.
Attorney Richard D. Lindsay is representing Garrett. The case has been assigned to Judge Tod Kaufman.
